# Does chalazion removal surgery hurt?

Chalazion removal surgery is usually not painful during the procedure because local anaesthetic is used. Recovery discomfort is typically mild and short-lived.

## During the procedure

Numbing injections into the eyelid sting briefly, then the area becomes numb. The lump is often opened from the inner surface of the lid.

- You may feel pressure or movement but not sharp pain
- Any discomfort can be reported so more anaesthetic is added
- The procedure is quick, often under twenty minutes
- No external scar is usually visible when the incision is internal

## After surgery

The eyelid may ache, feel bruised, and look swollen for a few days. Pain is usually easily controlled.

- Simple painkillers and warm compresses aid comfort
- Severe pain, spreading redness, or discharge should be reviewed urgently
- Most patients resume normal activities quite quickly
- Ongoing lid hygiene helps reduce the chance of future chalazia
