# What are the symptoms of thyroid eye disease?

[Thyroid eye disease symptoms](https://bluefinvision.com/blog/what-are-the-symptoms-of-thyroid-eye-disease/) affect both comfort and appearance. They can range from mild grittiness to significant bulging and double vision.

## Early eye and eyelid changes

Inflammation makes tissues around the eye swollen and tight. This can cause several noticeable symptoms.

- Red, watery, or gritty eyes that feel like they have sand in them
- Eyelid retraction, giving a wide-eyed or staring look
- Swelling around the lids and puffy bags, especially in the morning
- Sensitivity to wind, smoke, and bright light

## More serious symptoms

As the condition progresses, muscles and fat behind the eye can enlarge. This may affect vision and eye safety.

- Bulging eyes with difficulty closing the lids fully
- Double vision, particularly when looking up or to the side
- Pain or discomfort when moving the eyes
- Urgent review if colours fade, central vision blurs, or you notice dimming
