# Is ICL surgery suitable for high myopia?

Yes. ICL surgery is particularly well suited for high myopia, where laser eye surgery may be less safe or predictable.

## Why ICL works well in high myopia

It corrects power without thinning the cornea.

- Effective correction usually up to around -18 dioptres, and sometimes slightly higher
- Preserves corneal strength and shape
- Often provides sharper optics than very strong glasses or contacts
- Reversible if future lens or retinal surgery is required
- Can be combined with toric correction if astigmatism is present

## Key safety checks

High myopes need careful screening.

- Retinal examination for lattice, tears, or previous detachment
- Measurement of anterior chamber depth and angle width
- Endothelial cell counts to ensure long‑term corneal health
- Counselling about the ongoing risk of myopic retinal complications
- Long‑term follow‑up for vault, pressure, and lens transparency
