# How to manage swelling after eye surgery?

Mild swelling around the eye is common after surgery and usually settles with simple measures.

## Normal post-surgical swelling

The eyelids and surrounding skin may look puffy or bruised. This is part of the healing process, especially after procedures involving the lids or muscles.

- Swelling is often worse in the morning and improves during the day
- Slight redness or tenderness is common but should lessen over time
- Cool compresses may ease discomfort if approved by your surgeon
- Sleeping with the head slightly raised can reduce puffiness

## When swelling needs urgent review

Increasing swelling with pain, discharge, or fever can indicate infection or bleeding. Quick action protects both comfort and vision.

- Seek urgent advice if the eye becomes very tight, hard, or painful
- Report any sudden drop in vision straight away
- Follow instructions about lifting, bending, and strenuous activity
- Do not apply ice or creams near the eye unless specifically advised
