# What is macular oedema?

Macular oedema is a build-up of fluid in the central retina that causes the macula to thicken and swell. It can result from diabetes, vein occlusions, inflammation or post-surgical changes.

## Symptoms and diagnosis

Typical symptoms are blurred or wavy central vision and difficulties with reading and fine detail. OCT scanning is used to confirm the presence and severity of swelling.

- Different underlying causes require different treatment strategies
- Options include eye drops, intravitreal injections and laser
- Controlling systemic risk factors such as diabetes and blood pressure is important
- Regular follow-up helps guide the timing of repeat treatments
