# Wet macular degeneration

[Wet age-related macular degeneration is a chronic condition](https://bluefinvision.com/blog/what-is-wet-amd-understanding-age-related-macular-degeneration/) where abnormal leaky blood vessels grow under the macula. Without treatment it can rapidly damage central vision.

## Symptoms and diagnosis

Changes often affect one eye first, but both may be involved over time.

- Distortion of straight lines, central blur, or a dark patch when reading
- Colours looking washed out and difficulty recognising faces
- OCT scans and fluorescein angiography confirm fluid and new vessels
- Needs urgent assessment if symptoms appear suddenly

## Treatment

Anti-VEGF injections are the main treatment and can stabilise or improve sight in many people.

- Series of intravitreal injections followed by monitoring and top-ups
- Lifestyle measures such as not smoking and maintaining a healthy diet
- Low-vision support if central damage is advanced
- Regular follow-up to detect any recurrence early
