# Pterygium (surfer’s eye)

A [pterygium is a wedge-shaped growth of conjunctiva](https://bluefinvision.com/blog/what-is-pterygium-understanding-the-surfers-eye/) that extends onto the cornea, often related to UV and environmental exposure. It is sometimes called "surfer's eye".

## Symptoms and risk factors

Many pterygia are asymptomatic in early stages.

- Visible fleshy growth on the nasal side of the white of the eye
- Irritation, redness, and foreign-body sensation during flares
- More common in people living in sunny, dusty, or windy climates
- Can induce astigmatism or threaten the visual axis if large

## Management

Treatment depends on size, symptoms, and cosmetic concern.

- Lubricating and anti-inflammatory drops for mild irritation
- UV protection with wraparound sunglasses and hats
- Surgical excision with conjunctival autograft when vision, comfort, or cosmesis is affected
- Post-operative follow-up to monitor for recurrence
