Meeting the criteria
For you to be able to have refractive surgery also known as laser eye surgery, it is important that you meet certain criteria.
You may be asking yourself why? Well, it is important to make sure that you meet the criteria for a successful procedure.
Your prescription must be within certain limits
Your surgeon is likely to advise you against laser eye surgery if your prescription is too high. A high prescription could be due to, long-sightedness or astigmatism. Therefore, this could cause a higher risk of refractive errors.
If you have fluctuating contact lenses or glasses prescription, then laser eye surgery is unlikely to be best for you. Teenagers and young adults are likely to find these changes up until their early 20 where refractive errors may start to stabilise. Therefore, it is important to have a stable prescription before undergoing surgery.
Be in good health
It is important that your eyes are healthy. Having an eye condition such as dry eyes and conjunctivitis will only mean that you will have to wait until the condition is resolved.
If you suffer from persistent dry eyes (do not produce enough tears to keep your eyes lubricated) then having laser eye surgery may make the condition worse. The common symptoms of dry eyes include stinging, burning and excessive tears. Your eye doctor can examine you to find out if you suffer from dry eyes. However, if you find that have experienced the symptoms, discuss them with your doctor before surgery.
