When Sam arrived at Blue Fin Vision® Chelmsford, she had one goal: clear, natural vision without glasses or contact lenses. With a prescription of –7.00 diopters, she had been told by several clinics that her myopia was too high for laser eye surgery. But after meeting Mr. Mfazo Hove, she discovered a safer, longer-lasting solution – Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) Surgery.
“Dr. Hove recommended this procedure as my prescription was quite high, and the laser eye surgery I initially wanted wasn’t the best option for me. I’m so glad I trusted his advice because the ICL surgery has truly been life-changing.”
– Sam, Blue Fin Vision® patient (Chelmsford)
A Personalised Approach to Vision Correction
Every Blue Fin Vision® journey begins with a comprehensive diagnostic assessment – the same advanced optical technology found at our Harley Street flagship, extended across all our regional centres including Chelmsford, Hatfield, Weymouth Street Hospital, and Chase Lodge Hospital.
For Sam, her evaluation included:
- High-resolution anterior segment OCT to assess anterior chamber depth and sulcus-to-sulcus dimensions
- White-to-white corneal measurements for accurate ICL sizing
- Endothelial cell count (ECC) and corneal health evaluation
- Simulation of postoperative vaults using AI-assisted biometry planning
These diagnostics confirmed that Sam’s eyes were perfectly suited for ICL implantation – offering the clarity of lens-based correction without removing any corneal tissue.
The Procedure - Precision and Comfort
Sam underwent her ICL implantation at The Phoenix Hospital, Chelmsford, where the same consultant-led surgical standards applied as at our Harley Street theatres.
Using our Leica M844 ophthalmic microscope and Zeiss surgical integration workflow, Mr Hove implanted the ICL lenses with microscopic precision.
“The entire procedure was quick, completely painless, and far easier than I ever expected. I could actually see clearly as soon as I got off the operating table.”
– Sam
Each surgery typically takes under 20 minutes per eye, and patients are awake throughout under topical anaesthesia. Sam’s calm, comfortable experience reflects our focus on the Blue Fin Vision® Standard – combining clinical excellence, technological precision, and patient reassurance at every step.
Immediate Results - 20/20 and Beyond
By the next morning, Sam reported 20/20 vision – later confirmed to be even sharper, at 6/5 in both eyes unaided.
Her postoperative refraction on 11 November 2025 showed:
- Right eye: Sphere +0.50, Cylinder –0.25, Axis 129, Unaided visual acuity (VA): 6/5
- Left eye: Sphere +1.00, Cylinder –0.25, Axis 75°, Unaided visual acuity (VA): 6/5
These minimal refractive values indicate perfect centration and optical balance – the hallmark of optimal ICL sizing and alignment.
OCT Vault Analysis - Data-Driven Perfection
At Blue Fin Vision®, every ICL patient receives postoperative imaging to verify vault height – the distance between the back of the ICL and the front of the crystalline lens.
Sam’s measurements taken with our Heidelberg anterion OCT platform showed:
- Right Eye: 662 µm
- Left Eye: 694 µm
These vault values fall squarely within the ideal safety range (500–750 µm), confirming excellent sizing and long-term lens stability.
By maintaining a consistent vault across the Blue Fin Vision® network through standardised Zeiss workflow protocols, we ensure that inter-site outcomes remain reproducible – whether surgery is performed in Harley Street, Chelmsford, Hatfield, or Chase Lodge Hospital.
The Patient Experience - Calm, Caring, and Consistent
“Dr Hove and the theatre team were absolutely wonderful, and the nurses at Phoenix Hospital were so kind and reassuring – they really helped me feel calm and comfortable throughout the whole experience.”
– Sam
Sam’s words capture what every patient should expect – world-class surgical care without the anxiety often associated with eye surgery.
Each Blue Fin Vision® site mirrors the same workflow, equipment, and nursing standards, ensuring that our patients receive identical care, regardless of location.
